San Roque is the City of Gibraltar in Exile and features the largest collection of listed historical buildings in the Gibraltar Area.

This theatre was opened in the summer of 1995. It was named after the well-known San Roque-born actor Juan Luis Galiardo on 10th February 2001.

The Bull Ring

The Bull Ring

The Bull Ring, which was built in 1853, is the oldest in the province of Cadiz and one of the oldest ones in Andalusia.

Saint Roque Shrine

Saint Roque Shrine

The new Saint Roque Chapel was erected in 1801 and has neoclassical architecture. The shrine houses a statue of Saint Roque.

Plaza de Andalucía Square

The Plaza de Andalucía Square was where part of a British-produced film, The Running Man was filmed in 1963.

San Felipe Street

San Felipe Street is the steep road between the Alameda Square and the Church Square. The street stands out due to its impressive and tidy façades with iron wrought bars on windows and decorative balconies adorned with flowers and plants, not to mention typical Andalusian patios.

Saint Mary the Crowned Parish Church

Saint Mary the Crowned Parish Church

Saint Mary the Crowned Parish Church dates from the 18th century and features Tuscan architecture and Baroque artwork. Once the town had been founded, work began in 1735 on the construction of a church over the foundations of the original Chapel of Saint Roque, built in 1508.

The Governor's Palace

The Governor's Palace

The Governor’s Palace has neoclassical civil architecture and dates from the 18th century. It was the Military Command Headquarters for Spanish forces in the Gibraltar area until the 19th century and is said to have been where many attacks during the sieges on the Rock were planned.

Plaza de Armas Square

Plaza de Armas Square (Place of Arms) used to be the Main Square. It used to have a sandy surface and was used as the arena for bull fights. People say that it was where Manuel Ballón “El Africano” invented modern bullfighting, the Red Cape and Sword Technique in 1720.

The City Hall

The City Hall

The City Hall has 19th century neoclassical architecture and was built in 1841. The building features a stained glass window and marble plaques, dating back to the 1950s, depicting the issue of the sovereignty of Gibraltar and the loss of the Rock in 1704.

Poet Domingo de Mena Viewpoint

Poet Domingo de Mena Viewpoint is popularly known as “The Canons”. This a wonderful vantage point with views of the Rock, the entire Bay of Algeciras and North Africa.

San Nicolás Street & Historiador Montero Street

Undoubtedly these two streets are the most picturesque ones in the old quarter of the town. San Nicolás Street has a very peculiar stretch, popularly known as “The Steps Street”.

General Lacy Street and Coronel Moscoso are the two segments of the popularly known as “Malaga Street”. They are the main commercial artery of town life and the urban thoroughfare where all the city’s main public demonstrations and festive parades go along.

Our Lady of Visitation Chapel

Our Lady of Visitation Chapel dates back to the 18th century. This temple houses the image of the Nazarene recovered from Gibraltar. Amongst the images inside, the statues of Our Lady of Anguish and The Most Blessed Mary of Sorrows, which are paraded during Holy Week, stand out the most.

The Lion Statue

The Lion Statue

The Lion was the work of Cristóbal Quesada, its first location being the San Felipe Neri Chapel. It symbolizes the valour, courage and strength of the fallen during the sieges on Gibraltar.

Saint Roque & the Dog Statue

Saint Roque & the Dog Statue

It is the work of Victor Quintanilla and was placed in Cuatro Vientos in 1998. The Dog from San Roque is called “Melampo” and according to the famous Spanish saying Ramón Ramírez was the one who cut its tail off.

This 18th century drinking fountain is one of San Roque’s timeless symbols. The name appears in old songs and legends.

Pinar del Rey Pine Woods

Pinar del Rey Pine Woods

This forest dates back to 1800 when the powerful Spanish Navy planted trees here to supply timber to build warships.

Simon Susarte Park

Simon Susarte Park

Simon Susarte Park’s main street feature is a fountain with a statue of this remarkable goat shepherd, reminding us of his heroic deed during the first siege on Gibraltar.
